California Attorney General Rob Bonta is leaning on hospitals to continue offering gender-affirming care for youth, calling Trump’s recent executive order that threatens to stop funding treatments wrong.

Bay Area medical institutions including Kaiser Permanente and UCSF have continued appointments.

Families of transgender youth, represented by the ACLU and others, have sued to attempt to block the order.

Jack Turban, a pediatric psychiatrist: “For some young people with gender dysphoria, their symptoms can be really severe and disabling… And this executive order is trying to take away the treatments that we know are helpful and effective for those symptoms.”

In a letter, Bonta reminded Children’s Hospital Los Angeles of its “obligation” under state law to provide care, after it paused hormonal therapies and surgeries for minors.
